A protein particle similar to a virus but lacking nucleic acid (any of a group of complex compounds [such as DNA and RNA] that are found in living cells and viruses and control cellular function and heredity). Prions are thought to be the infectious agent responsible for certain degenerative diseases of the nervous system.

A new method for studying prion diversity has been developed by noting the molecular features of a specifc type of sheep scrapie, according to an article published on August 28, 2008 in the open access journal PLoS Pathogens. A prion is an agent of infection that is composed entirely of protein.

A team from the French Food Safety Agency, Lyon, France, has identified a prion protein characteristic that is unique to some natural but unusual sheep scrapie cases. This finding, reported August 29th in the open-access journal PLoS Pathogens, may provide a novel method by which to study prion diversity and their possible changes during cross-species transmission.
