Placebo Defined

Any intentionally ineffective medical treatment, such as a sugar pill, used to replace medication. In clinical trials, placebos are given to control groups to compare the results of people who receive the placebo with the results of those who receive the experimental drug. The experimental treatment must produce better results than the placebo in order to be considered effective.
