Men who are slimmer in middle age are at greater risk of having osteoporosis later in life, a new study confirms. And while losing weight between one's 40s and 70s increased osteoporosis risk, weight gain reduced it, Dr. Haakon E. Meyer of the University of Oslo in Norway and colleagues found.

  • How Rheumatoid Arthritis causes bone loss: Experiments showed that increased TNF alpha levels dramatically decreased the levels of two key factors, Smad1 and Runx2. Both Smad1 and Runx2 signaled to increase the number of bone-building osteoblasts, but only if Smurf1 was present to pass on the signal from TNF alpha.
