Novartis has announced that Gleevec (imatinib mesylate) tablets, (known as Glivec (imatinib) outside the US, Canada and Israel), has been granted priority review status by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as the first therapy to be reviewed for use after surgery in kit-positive gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST).

Neurologists at Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey are using a high-tech form of Doppler ultrasound to analyze blood flow in the brain and assess the risk of stroke. The procedure, known as transcranial Doppler ultrasonography, is a painless, noninvasive method of analyzing blood flow through the carotid arteries or the arteries at the base of the brain using high-frequency sound waves.
