Study finds genetic variant plays role in cleft lip

Published October 6, 2008, 12:17 pm, PhysOrg

University of Iowa researchers and collaborators have found, in a previously identified gene, a variation that likely contributes to one in five cases of isolated cleft lip. It is the first time a genetic variant has been associated with cleft lip alone, rather than both cleft lip and palate.

Study finds genetic variant plays role in cleft lip

Published October 6, 2008, 8:13 am, EurekAlert!

( University of Iowa ) Researchers have found, in a previously identified gene, a variation that likely contributes to one in five cases of isolated cleft lip. It's the first time a genetic variant has been associated with cleft lip alone, rather than both cleft lip and palate. The study provides insight on a previously unknown genetic mechanism and could eventually help with diagnosis, ...

Molecular Machines That Control Genes

Published October 3, 2008, 12:48 pm, Scientific American

Editor's Note: This article was originally published in the February 1995 issue of Scientific American. We are reposting it this week because Robert Tijan has just been named president of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Asthma, cancer, heart disease, immune disorders and viral infections are seemingly disparate conditions. Yet they turn out to share a surprising feature. All arise to a ...

Simple Twists Of Fate

Published October 2, 2008, 8:21 pm, Science Daily

A novel study in PLoS Biology reports on some of the molecular gymnastics performed by a protein involved in regulating DNA transcription. Using state-of-the art tools, researchers observed the shape and behavior of individual DNA molecules bent into tight loops by Lac repressor, a protein from the bacterium E.coli that switches on and off individual genes.

Modeling How Proteins Interact With DNA

Published October 1, 2008, 3:08 am, Medical News Today

An article published in the open-access journal PLoS Biology reports on DNA loop formation - one very important process in the regulation of gene expression. Researchers from Brandeis University used state-of-the-art tools to observe a protein involved in regulating DNA transcription. Lac repressor is a protein from the bacterium E.
