- 4G to make up 2.6% of connections in 2014, says Ovum - Rethink Wireless: There will be around 109m LTE connections by 2014, and 55m Mobile WiMAX users, but the two 4G technologies will still be only 2.6% of the total global mobile connections. "The migration to 4G will be neither easy nor overnight,&quo t; says a new report from market analyst firm Ovum. Most growth will come from 3G expansion in this period, with the rise of data rich devices and applications in developed countries, and increasing penetration in emerging economies. However, growth in mobile operators' ; revenues will drop in the short term because of the recession. They will cross the $1 trillion barrier in 2011 - though this is a year later than previously forecast, according to estimates from Ovum. The recession will cause a short term slowdown in services revenues although "the recessionary impact will be relatively muted compared to other industries, and mobile is expected to recover strongly from 2011", according to senior analyst Steven Hartley.
- FT.com / Companies / Telecoms - D Telekom seeks asset swap for T-Mobile UK: Deutsche Telekom is looking for an asset swap deal with any would-be bidder for T-Mobile UK, its UK unit, to cushion the blow of pulling out of a big market. Two people familiar with the German telecoms operator said that executives saw a swap for an asset in another country as the ?preferred option? to either selling the business or merging it with a UK rival. But they warned that the unwillingness of a would-be bidder to part with another asset and the complexity of dealing with regulators in two countries could make this ?dream deal? the most difficult to clinch.

- 11% of Britons Never Make a Phone Call on their Mobile: With ownership of mobile phones so high and so many different functions now available, it is increasingly important to understand how people are using their mobile phones and what future opportunities there might be for new applications. Of the four countries surveyed (the UK, France, Germany and the US) it was Americans (49%) and Britons (30%) who were most likely to agree that their mobile phone was now an essential part of their daily life and they?d be lost without it. Almost half of people in Britain (46%) stated they carried their phones with them most of the time ? with the 55-64 year olds most likely to do so. Younger respondents (18-34) who were more likely to feel their mobile was an essential part of their daily life and they would be ?lost without it?. And underlining this finding is the fact that two thirds (67%) of Brits leave their mobiles on at night - and only 14% of those switch it to silent.
- UMTS900 Operator Case Study Shows Cost and Coverage Benefits: The Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) has published a new UMTS900 operator case study on Optus in Australia, which shows significant cost and coverage benefits of deploying 3G mobile broadband services with UMTS900. The case study examines the business drivers and practical experiences of Optus, who launched UMTS900 in May 2008. It confirms the findings from GSA's earlier UMTS900 case study on Elisa Corporation in Finland, and also provides additional insights. According to Andrew Smith, Director, Mobile Core Engineering for Optus, "UMTS900 is ideally suited for Australia. The extended reach of this frequency means we can deliver better quality and wider coverage across sparsely populated areas, as well as enhanced depth of coverage." ;
